What do you think Mr. Jingles symbolized? And why was he important or necessary for the movie?
or
So far, all of the literary works of Magical Realism that we have read in class have had social critques in mind. Do you believe that there is a message that The Green Mile is trying to relay to us? If so, how does that message relate or apply to our society?
One thought could be that our justice system is screwed up and needs improvement, though in the time frame of The Green Mile there is hardly any room for improvement. I believe parts of the message that The Green Mile is trying to give us involves the ideas of how karma can work and how there are things in the world that can't be explained, but shouldn't be ignored.
ReplyDeleteMisery, injustice and agony are constantly afflicting our world. Blameless individuals are raped of their innocence, corruption overtakes the administrations meant to protect us, sins plague humanity with the inevitability of death. In a way, happiness comes from being ignorant or forgetful in a callous world. The Green Mile, however, sets up a plot meant to suspend our reason and seek our faith. It proposes a higher entity or a miracle-worker intending to salvage or punish humankind from or for its own transgressions. Perhaps, its about retribution. But then again, if both murderer "Wild Bill" Wharton, loving Eduard Delacriox, and faith healer John Coffey all die in the end, is that representation of injustice, or a message that life is nothing but a sequence of decisions we make until we reach the gates of God? Or, maybe the movie just trying to convey that in this woe-stricken world, there's something more important than crime and pain - and that's hope, or faith in salvation.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles brought out the true colors in several characters. For example, he showed the good heart of Dale. Dale's personality went from stubborn to compassionate. As for Percy, Mr. Jingles emphasized his coldness. Everyone in the building learned to love the innocent little creature, except for Percy. He was a hateful character who showed revulsion toward even the most purest character in the movie.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles represented the bit of hope that all people look for deep in their hearts. He served as an entity of pure innocence for the inmates. Percy, as the villain of this story, wanted to destroy any sense of justice or happiness, which makes me wonder. Why does Percy hope to achieve in bringing suffering to other people? Is it because of his own insecurities?
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles symbolizes that certain special quality that everyone has in them and its impact on others. Not only did Mr. Jingles approach the prison guards without fear, but he managed to return E Block even after Percy tried to kill him. This lack of fear is clearly shown when the surprised guards mention that it wasn’t “normal for a mouse to come up on people”. In addition, when the mouse befriended Del, a prisoner on Death Row, it’s discovered that it can play fetch with a spool. Although this does not seem like a talent worthy of being praised, keep in mind that a mouse is doing this. However, Mr. Jingles doesn’t show his talent to just anyone. For example, while he does show the guards his trick, Percy is always absent. This could symbolize the type of people there are in the world; people who take the time to understand someone’s uniqueness and others who judge on first impression and first impression alone. Mr. Jingles can be a parallel to John Coffey. At the beginning of the movie, all of the guards, including Paul, see John as just another inmate that needs to be executed. As the film continues, Paul begins being considerate to John; as a result, John shows Paul his special ability. However, as Percy constantly insults him, he isn’t given the chance to see John’s abilities (much like how Mr. Jungles hid from Percy and the guards primarily).
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingle’s affect on the lives of the other characters surfaces after Del’s execution. While Mr. Jingles provided a companion to Del, it gave Del a chance to really wonder about his past actions and how he could possibly reconcile for them in the present. After all, a pet can really show just how much compassion one has for living beings.
Mr. Jingles was important in the movie because he revealed or opened up the characters in the movie. For example, in the beginning of the movie, I thought Dale was a lunatic and a cruel person. However, when the mouse became more acquainted with Dale, you can see how Dale is an extremely kind person. He is warm-hearted and compassionate towards the mouse, Mr. Jingles. He was also important when he died and came back to life. Without being killed in the first place, the guards wouldn't be able to see the miracle that John performed. Finally, towards the end, Mr. Jingles is still alive. This is another sign that shows how a miracle took place. The mouse lived for a large amount of time; and so did Paul. The overall film produced tons of magical events which are obvious signs of magical realism. Mr. Jingles is one important figure in this movie.
ReplyDeleteMr.Jingles represented the fact that we can't judge anyone by their outer makeup. Mr.Jingles didn't look like anything but an ordinary mouse, but when you got to know the mouse, you realized how special he was and the fact that he was extraordinary in the fact he could do tricks. He also represents John Coffey. He may seem like no one special and a murderer in the story, but it turns out he has the ability to heal and is a gift from god. Mr.Jingles is a remiinder to not judge one based on the outside, but what lies in a person's heart.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles was an important asset to the move "The Green Mile," because the mouse brought life to the unhappy E block. The E Block was an area marked for death, and here comes this small mouse that just makes everyone feel a little better because of its intelligence. The Mouse displays John Coffey's powers by staying alive for so many years.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles was a main part of the film the Green Mile. I think Mr. Jingles relationship to E block goes hand and hand with John Coffey. Mr Jingles in the begining was a distraction and was wanted away. Coffey at the same time was a fear because of his size. Jingles and Coffey both different sizes the humans were finally realized that they were different than who they were on the outside. The Security in the block was much different and relaxed as they saw the good in a mouse and overly sized inmate. Two opposites an animal and man that were very simmilar. Mr Jinggles was John Coffey in a mouses body.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Mr. Jingles represented the happiness of people's life. When Mr. Jingles was in Dale's hands he was very happy, the happiest he can be. Though at the end of the film he was still alive with Paul because John Coffeey died on the electric chair. It was some sort of punishment for Paul but I don't understand why Mr. Jingles can't die. I am still confuse about that but Mr. Jingles was like John who as a loving person that was misjudge by people. Mr. Jingles was misunderstood by Percy.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mr. Jingles symbolized love and happiness. H e was important and necessary to the movie because there was no love or happiness in the movie. There was so much hatred and evil in The Green Mile. Mr. Jingles was important to the movie because he showed that even though the men were in jail they were still human like everyone else. They still had feelings even though they committed such horrible crimes. Mr. Jingles' role in the movies proved that and that made it seem so much worse and real when the men were put to death in the electric chair. It makes us feel empathetic.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles represents compassion and innocence of everyone. All of the guards try to find the mouse so they can capture him. Some of the guards feed him and see how gentle he is. Percy tries to kill him by stomping on him and smashing him. When Mr. Jingles goes to the prisoner and plays with him it gave the prisoner some will to be alive. He loved Mr. Jingles and wanted to keep him as a pet. Even Percy told the other guards to make him a bed for Mr. Jingles to sleep in. Mr. Jingles made the prisoner forget that he was going to be put to death and made the mood of everyone more happy.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles was my most favorite character in the movie. The mouse represents the sense of relationship in the movie. He brings out love and compssion. Mr. Jingles also brought out the sense of awe. Mr. Jingles suprises everybody when he showed that he could be trained and understands when one is talking to him. It comes to show that you cant judje one by their outter appearance as well as their reputation. Mr. Jingles proves the sterotype wrong that all mouses are just are dirty filthy little creatures.

ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles was a great mouse. He brought out the characters in the movie. The ones that tried to kill it and the ones that just watched it.
