What to you is the major theme or point the author is trying to portray in the Grass Dancer?
I think that tradition is one of the major themes that is portrayed in the Grass Dancer. Harley wants to be like his ancestry of warriors. This goes along with values that each character has from what background they came from. I also think that life lessons are being taught through the stories of the characters. Harley is still trying to discover himself which is what some people can relate to.

One of the main themes in The Grass Dancer highly deals with the influence of heritage and ancestry on younger generations. Specifically, Harley wishes to be like his father and uncle, who both earned the reputation as warriors. However, finding his own path is key to his own development. Charlene is another example of how elders influence young people. Charlene's grandmother, Mercury, with her strange actions allows Charlene to question and criticize her, until the point where she ends up thinking just like her.
ReplyDeleteI believe that one major theme is the influence of tradition. As individuals, we tend to follow what our elders' pass down from generation to generation. Such examples are: rituals, oral tradition, or ceremonies. In The Grass Dancer, Harley wants to follow or be like his father who was a warrior. He wishes to follow under his footsteps. This shows how people in our lives influence the way we act in society.
ReplyDeleteThis book deals with a lot on tradition and culture. What is different about this book is that it is being told backwards, so it is like you are going back in time, learning of the different beliefs and customs of the different generations. While reading, you understand that people from the past have greatly influenced the present characters.
ReplyDeleteI think the main point that the author is trying to make is tradition and where she comes from. Susan Powers feels that a great way to tell her story is by letting her authors about her family history and where she comes from. Each one of the characters can be influences by Ms. Powers, because maybe in her life she lost someone special or look up to a role model that she wanted to follow like Harley.
ReplyDeleteI think the main themes of the Grass dancer are family and tradition. In each chapter, famiy and tradition are constantly being brought up and they are two very essential themes to the book. They make the book what it is. With out family and tradition the book would not give us the same feeling while reading it. When reading, I can definantly tell that family and tradition are very important to each character. They take up a big presence in their lives.
