The Grass Dancer - Lydia

Lydia, Harley's Mom, took a vow of silence after her husband and nephew died. We now know that the reason for her silence is because she believes her words are what killed them, the night they left for their drive she told them to leave - to get "out of her hair". She blames herself for their deaths. Do you think it is fair of her to take a vow of silence, to never talk to her son Harley, all because she blames herself? Is it fair to Harley who must be burdened with the grief of the loss of his Dad and brother as well as the agonizing silence of his mother?

  1. I personally do not think it is fair for Harley since he has to suffer. She should have been glad that she at least has a family member left and that she is not alone. She should cherish Harley and be able to talk to him rather than take a vow of silence of something that happened entirely due to fate. I have sympathy for Harley because he has to live with a mother who won't talk to him because of something that happened before he was born. He didn't do anything to his mother to have her not speak to him. So I do think it is unfair for his mother to just stop talking to him because she blames herself.

  2. Lydia should never have taken her vow of silence after the deaths of her husband and nephew. Although it is human nature for her to blame herself for their deaths, resorting to such an extreme is not only harmful to herself, but also to her son, Harley. While she wallows in grief and guilt Lydia fails to awknowledge the fact that her silence has left Harley to grow up missing a piece of himself. It is not fair for him to suffer after so much sorrow because he was completely innocent of everything that took place. He had no part in their deaths, and yet carries the burden upon his soul.

  3. Because she believes that it is her fault that her husband and nephew had died, Lydia took her vow of silence. I don't think that it is fair for Harley, because he also has to suffer from it. Because Lydia has taken a vow of silence she, in a way, isolates herself from her son. Harley is sad and alone and doesn't know what to do. He has to help himself and find a way to fill the void inside him, that was created from his family that has broken apart. He also has to suffer the sorrow that his mother has created for him. So yes I believe that it was unfair that Harley had to endure so much pain from his mothers silence.

  4. No it is not fair for Lydia to take a vow of silence. She is being very selfish. She is now taking it out on her only son, Harley and it is not fair to him. It is not Harley's fault that she told them to "get out of her hair" and now he is suffering for her actions. And on top of his own mother not speaking to him, he has to deal with the loss of his father and brother. I can not imagine how terrible he feels.
