Magical Realist aspects in The Sixth Sense

The film you watched this past week, The Sixth Sense, is pure Magical Realism...what aspects of the film would you use to support his statement?

  1. The film The Sixth Sense has the magical aspect of Cole being able to "see" ghosts. To some, they do believe that people are able to see these spirits that have not yet "passed on". It gets you to question whether this special gift can actually happen in the real world or if it is just purely magical through people's big imaginations.

  2. There is so much magical realism in this movie. In many ways I agree with Vanessa. There are many different stories about ghosts and why they "exist" (to those that can see them). I believe that the story in this movie is that ghosts cannot pass to the next world until they have finished what they need to do.
In this movie Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a prominent child psychologist, want to help a boy named Cole. Little does he know that his is a ghost himself, which was really surprising to me because I believed that he was really "there".
Cole is a young boy that has a special gift. The gift to see ghosts. But, because of this he is 'shunned' from society. Everyone thinks that Cole is a freak because he know things that he probable shouldn't. At the end Cole, with the help of Dr. Crowe, is able to handle the ghosts and is slowly being accepted back into the society by not over reacting and talking 'nonsense' or so called by those that think he's weird and a freak.
This may (or may not) get people thinking. What if these people with this gift can actually see ghosts and that their not making it up and not crazy? What if ghosts really do exist? Or is it just peoples imaginations that make them believe that they can see them?

  3. In the movie, The Sixth Sense, magical realism is present all throughout the movie. The young child Cole has the ability to see ghosts. He is one the very few who have the ability. Many of his classmates call him a freak or a weirdo. Dr. Crowe helps him control his gift of seeing the dead and helps him realize what they really want. At the end of the movie Dr. Crowe realizes that he is really dead. Cole sees dead people so he can help others. He saw Dr. Crowe to help himself realize what the other dead people wanted. This is magical realism because we don't really know if anyone can see dead people.
